5 Tips for the REAL Perfect Summer Body

Summer is creeping in fast and I don’t know about you but I’ve seen way too many social media ads about how to get the “perfect” summer body in time for swimsuit season. Barf.

Aside from making me want to gag (let’s be honest, no one actually likes seeing those kinds of ads), it actually brought up some thoughts about what we can do to have a real perfect summer body - not the fake, CGI, Instagram-filtered body.

I’m talking about ways we can improve our body image to help us embrace and respect where our bodies are at and freely enjoy everything this summer brings!

1. Instead of focusing on what your body looks like, focus on what it DOES for you.

At the end of the day, write down 1-3 things your body allowed you to do that day.

Keep a running list on a note in your phone or start writing down these body image glimmers on a post-it to place somewhere you'll see each day, like the bathroom mirror, your car dashboard, or even on your bedroom ceiling! Nothing beats starting the morning by seeing positive thoughts right out of the gate.

2. Wear clothes that make you FEEL good!

Ditch the clothes that don't fit your current body/personal style in this stage of life.

Don’t feel boxed in by who you were in the past either - use this as an invitation to explore new styles that make you excited!

3. Do a social media cleanse.

For real, NOW is the time to do this with all the BS messaging telling us our bodies need to change before summer - personally, I unfollow or mute literally anyone posting Before/After photos. I’d rather see videos of cute puppies cuddling, please and thank you.

4.Take a break from people who have a negative relationship with their bodies

Not forever, just a break.

Call a friend or plan a coffee date with a friend who you do enjoy and who makes you feel good, who you haven't talked to or seen in a while.

Do most people around you have a negative relationship with their bodies? Use this as a fresh motivation to expand your social circle to find people who will be a positive influence by putting yourself in good environments and trying new things - you may be surprised where you’ll find some golden people!

5. Take a break from the scale.

It's not doing you any favors. In fact, the scale is a tool of suppression imposed by diet culture. It may be keeping you from showing up authentically in your daily life if you’re focused on an arbitrary number instead of how you feel in your body each day.

Instead of checking it daily and letting it affect your mood, replace it with something that will genuinely bring you joy - like going for a little walk in nature, listening to your favorite song, or just taking a minute to sit back and reflect on something good you saw in your life this week. Trust me, even the smallest things add up.
