Pocket Snacks 1.23.25: The Power of One - How Small Actions Create Big Change
Here's your weekly dose of digestible snacks from me including
a mindset tip, a media recommendation, and an actual snack/food/recipe I've been loving!
MINDSET TIP/SHIFT
"The power of one" refers to the idea that even a single individual can create significant positive change by taking action, no matter how small, which can inspire others and ripple out to create a larger impact on the community; essentially, one person's positive actions can lead to a chain reaction of good deeds, making a real difference in the world around them.
The power of one is a concept I've kept in mind when I've felt discouraged, burned out, or hopeless given the state of the world.
If you ever doubt that you're making an impact, I highly recommend creating a folder of screenshots, emails, or other reminders of your impact on this world.
For example, a young woman who grew up in Jackson sent me this message a couple years ago. It was a reminder of the power of one:
How can we help others using the power of one
Small acts of kindness:
Performing simple acts like holding a door open, offering a compliment, or helping someone carry groceries can brighten someone's day and encourage others to do the same.
Volunteer work:
Dedicate time to a cause you care about, whether it's at a local shelter, environmental organization, or community center.
Donate to charities:
Even a small donation can make a difference for people in need.
Speak up against injustice:
If you see something wrong, don't be afraid to speak out and advocate for change.
Mentorship and support:
Share your knowledge and experience to guide others, whether it's through formal mentoring programs or simply offering advice to colleagues or peers.
Raise awareness:
Use your platform, whether online or in person, to educate others about important issues and encourage them to take action.
Practice empathy:
Actively listen to others, try to understand their perspectives, and show compassion.
Be mindful of your impact:
Consider how your daily actions affect others and consciously choose to make positive choices.
MEDIA REC (song)
Marjorie by Taylor Swift
Music is one of my tools in my coping toolbox, and that's because lyrics and words matter to me. In these unprecedented times, I believe it's important to remember that we all have more power than we realize. Our voices matter. Our words matter. Our actions matter. And little by little, we can create change for the greater good of humanity.
This is my favorite song from Taylor Swift's Evermore album because of the lyrics below…
Lyric Snapshot
Never be so polite, you forget your power
Never wield such power, you forget to be polite.
SNACK/FOOD/RECIPE
from Jenn Salib Huber, host of The Midlife Feast podcast (I love her!!)
"I've heard that many of you are in a deep freeze this week, so I'm sharing one of my favorite soups to help warm you up. It cooks up in less than 30 minutes and eats like a meal thanks to the red lentils and sweet potato.
It's perfect if adding more plants (and plant-based protein) to your plate is something you're working on.
Cozy comfort in a bowl! This quick and satisfying soup will keep you warm on chilly days."
Recipe note: I'd probably add chicken or tofu to this recipe to up the protein just a little bit, but that's just my preference!
